The Andrus Award is tangible recognition for his outstanding workĪs Tax-Aide Regional Coordinator, Helvick oversees operations for the free, volunteer-led tax preparation service in Iowa and in seven states, teaching local tax aide volunteers in tax law and TaxWise software.In addition, he prepares tax returns in his own community.In 2009 alone he prepared over 750 tax returns during the months of February, March and April.In addition, Helvick volunteers as an instructor and trainer in the AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP), helping Iowans maintain their independence on the road and keeping the community safe. AARP Iowa Honors James Helvick and IPTV AARP Iowa Honors James Helvick and IPTV Recognizing the outstanding contributions that individual Iowans and community partners make in meeting the needs of Iowans, AARP has recognized long-time volunteer Jim Helvick of Badger and statewide Iowa Public Television (IPTV) for their service.Helvick received Iowas 2010 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the Associations most prestigious and visible volunteer award for community service, and IPTV received the 2010 AARP Partner in Service Award at a celebration of volunteerism and service in Des Moines in December.Helvick, who is currently Regional Coordinator for the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program and is also a Tax-Aide Counselor and AARP Driver Safety Program Instructor, received the statewide honor based on his more than a dozen years of service and community involvement.This award acts as a symbol to members and the public that one person can make a significant difference for positive social change, said Tony Vola, Iowa AARP State President.
